Building Your Time Roadmap

There was a post recently on one of the forums I belong to about how you spend your time, and how much time is spent on administrative and "non-client" work. I did a time mapping exercise over the past few weeks, and here's what I found out about the way I work:

I spend about 32 hours per week on work for my clients
I spend about 15 hours per week on various volunteer activities (VA related and non-VA related)
I spend about 10 hours per week networking
and
I spend about 10 hours per week on administrative "stuff"

Since I want to up my client hours, I'll be upping the hours I spend doing client work, by adding a new client and turning over some of my administrative "stuff" to an intern, which should (I hope) free up a lot of time.

The way I work is not going to work for everyone else. What you need to do is find the rhythym that works FOR YOU! I know I can't spend 8 hours a day doing the same thing, day in and day out. Variety is the spice of my life. However, I know and appreciate that there are people out there that can.

Finding your balance, and finding the best way to work, will do a lot for knowing and understanding the type of VA work you want to do, and the type of clients that you want to have as your partners.
